Genetics Major by Mandy Berry

Her pride comes and goes

in waves.

Wanting to be

proper and liked

was such a mistake.

She has memories of when

her smiles weren’t fake

and a full schedule

wasn’t a bad thing.

Now she’s resenting

everything

about herself

that keeps her

in the backseat.

Only twenty-three,

and she doesn’t want

what’s coming.

You’re doing something valuable,

says everyone around her.

Good choice.

She doesn’t think so.

There’s her name.

This is it.

Twenty steps,

and it won’t matter anymore.

Twenty

little

steps.

She took the diploma

and rejected

the last escape.
